Real Reports "Excellent" Gas Shows from Oz CBM Well

Australian gas explorer Real Energy on December 3 said its Venus-1 coalbed methane (CBM) well in Project Venues in Queensland encountered multiple coal intervals with “excellent” gas shows. Preliminary interpretation of the wireline logs indicate about 25 m of net coal pay.

Venus-1 is the first CBM pilot well in the ATP 2051P Project Venus joint venture and was drilled to a total depth of 715 m. Real said that a coil tubing-deployed reservoir stimulation programme designed to improve water influx and ultimately gas flows from the targeted gassy coals was planned to start in the third week of December.

A pre- and post-stimulation short-term controlled water influx test will be carried out to compare the before and after stimulation results, the company said. Due to current restrictions on rig movements, Venus-1 will be brought into pilot CBM production early in January 2021.

“The results of the production pilot test will also be used to either expand the pilot or, if commercial flow rates are achieved, commence an aggressive appraisal programme designed to certify sufficient reserves for the Project Venus JV to secure gas sales agreements, allowing commercial field development,” Real said.

Project Venus is equally owned by Strata-X Energy and Real, and spans 154 km2 of the Walloon CBM fairway in Queensland’s Surat basin. In July, Strata-X and Real agreed to merge into a new company Pure Energy. Once the merger is complete, Pure will have 100% of Project Venus.
