Medvedev, Azarov, Meet to Discuss Gas Supply

Ukraine's Prime Minister, Mykola Azarov, was in Moscow Thursday for a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev.

According to the Ukraine government news service, Mr Azarov believes that the meeting "will be able to find a compromise on the topical issues of bilateral cooperation".

Chairman of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, also attended the talks.

The topic of gas supply has been in the headlines this week and will be top of the list for discussion. The contentious issue of Ukraine's 10-year contract with Gazprom, the Russian gas supplier, came to the fore after Ukraine agreed to import 5 bcm of gas from Germany, to be transported via Hungary.

However, Ukraine will buy 32.5 bcm of gas from Gazprom in the coming year, the amount stipulated under the gas and delivery contract, according to Ukrainian newspaper Kommersant. Two companies are purchasing the fuel this year, state-managed NAK Naftogaz Ukrainy and Dmitry Firtash’s Ostchem.
