PetroVietnam, Exxon Expect First Gas from Ca Voi Xanh Project in 2021

PetroVietnam and Exxon expect to flow first gas from Ca Voi Xanh (Blue Whale) project offshore Vietnam by 2021.

This point was raised on Wednesday when PetroVietnam Chairman Nguyen Xuan Son and Deputy General Director Nguyen Quoc Thap met with Exxon’s Vice President Raymond E Jones in Washington to discuss the progress of the project.

In 2013, the two companies had inked a deal to develop the Ca Voi Xanh natural gas field, which is estimated to hold 3-10 tcf of natural gas resource. The field is located in the South China Sea about 80 km (50 miles) off the coast between Vietnam's Quang Nam and Quang Ngai central provinces.

Jones said things have moved in the right direction in the last couple of year and the two parties will continue to work together to see that the project progresses as planned.

Son affirmed that a cooperation agreement and contracts signed with ExxonMobil would be implemented properly on shared views and create the best conditions for development. He also stated that the two side should seek to address issue of gas supplies to consumers at affordable price.

Petrovietnam would ask the Vietnamese government to find ways to build gas-fired power plants in the central region, he said.
