Workers Stranded on Petronas Rig after Myanmar Coup

Malaysia's state-run Petronas said on February 7 it was working to ensure the safety of about 155 workers stranded on a barge servicing the Yetagun gas rig, offshore Myanmar, following the country's military coup.

The workers are employed by a contractor. Another 36 contracted workers and two Petronas employees have already been transported to nearby hotels for onshore rest and recovery while observing Covid-19 quarantine requirements, the Malaysian firm said.

“In response to news reports claiming that the workers are stranded offshore following a military coup in Myanmar, Petronas reassures that it is in close contact with the team and working closely with the contractor in overseeing the well-being of their workers and ensuring continuous supplies of essentials, including food, drinking water and fuel, “it said.

Petronas said it was working with its contractor, the embassy of Malaysia in Myanmar, the Malaysian foreign ministry and all relevant authorities to resolve the situation.
