PTTEP Hits Gas off Malaysia

Thailand's PTTEP and its partners have made a gas discovery at the Lang Lebah-2 well some 80 km off the coast of Sarawak in Malaysia.

The well was drilled at block SK410B, which PTTEP operates with a 42.5% interest. Malaysia's Petronas, which reported the find on February 10, has 15%, while Kuwait's Kufpec has 42.5%. The borehole reached a 4,320-m depth in mid-January, encountering over 600 m of proven net gas pay.

"The well was tested and flowed at 50mn ft3/day of gas with a significant amount of gas in place," Petronas said. "This is an appraisal drilling to confirm the upside potential and to accelerate the development programme."

Petronas joined with PTTEP and Kufpec in a production-sharing contract in 2016 for SK410B, spanning around 1,800 m2 of shallow sea. The group went on to make a gas discovery in 2019 with the Lang Lebah-1RDR2 well, which encountered a 252-m net pay. The high-pressure, high-temperature field, estimated to be 2 trillion ft3 in size, is being prepared for development.

The latest find, Petronas continued, is "testimony to Malaysia's highly prolific basins and demonstrates the tremendous untapped exploration potential, as witnessed in this world-class super basin in offshore Malaysia."
