Perth Now: Alcoa Australia Scraps $40 mn Deal with Buru Energy to Fund Kimberley Gas Project

ALCOA Australia has scrapped its $40 million deal with Buru Energy to help fund its Kimberley gas project in WA.

Buru Energy celebrated the official opening of its Ungani onshore oilfield, 100km east of Broome in the Canning Basin, on Wednesday.

Ungani is the first oil development in the Kimberley in almost 30 years.

The Perth-based company is currently using conventional drilling but has plans to use fracking on shale gas in the region.

The Wilderness Society WA said the Perth-based company must drop its plans to frack as it was a “dangerous technique”.

Campaign manager Jenita Enevoldsen said Alcoa’s withdrawal “signals the death of fracking in the Kimberley”. MORE
