Pakistan cuts gas supplies to some industry amid shortages

Pakistan's main gas company Sui Southern Gas Co (SSGC)  reported on December 10 that it was cutting gas supplies to non-export general industries from December 11 to conserve volumes for household and commercial users this winter.

Pakistan is in the grip of a gas supply crunch, caused by cold weather and exacerbated by a tight market for international LNG supplies, which the country relies on to supplement domestic production.

"The decision has been taken in order to make gas available to the domestic and commercial sectors during the current winter season that has seen a major demand-supply gap due to an extraordinary spike in fulfilling water and space heating needs in Sindh and Balochistan," SSGC said in a post on social media.

SSGC said that supplies to zero-rated export industries, exempt from value-added tax, such as fertiliser plants and captive power plants, would continue as usual. The company has also cut off supplies to compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations in the Sindh and Balochistan provinces this month.
