Pakistan Prepares for Gas Shortage

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Asim Hussain has said that the country may face a gas scarcity during the next two years and the government is working to bridge the gap.

Hussain said the government was in the process of implementing the 1st energy policy.

He said that due to irrationalized policies, four gas fields remained vacant in Sindh but soon three would start working.

Talking about the $ 1.2 billion joint venture of Habib Bank and a Chinese firm, he said that the study on shale gas was complete and in a couple of years supplies would be available.

The country holds about fifty trillion cubic feet of shale gas reserves that can last as long as thirty years or more.

Pakistan’s production of natural gas had increased to 4.2b MMCF per day, however there was still a gap of 2b MMCF between demand and supply.
