Origin Energy Resumes CSG Drilling in Queensland After Asbestos Scare

Origin, as upstream operator of the Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG) project, Wednesday announced a phased restart of previously suspended drilling operations in Queensland.

The company announced a precautionary measure to suspend coal seam gas drilling at 12 rig sites due to an asbestos scare last week.

“Origin is diligently working through a comprehensive and systematic process of airborne and surface testing to ensure drilling rigs either have no traces of asbestos or have been verified as safe and cleared to resume operations,” the company said.

Five of the previously suspended drilling rigs have been tested and returned to work. The remaining seven rigs are expected to progressively return to service over the coming days.

The APLNG project brings together a joint venture between Origin (37.5%), ConocoPhillips(37.5%)  and Sinopec (25%).
