Daily News: Tanzania - Much Care Needed to Handle Our Gas Riches

The Minister for Energy and Minerals, Mr George Simbachawene, on Monday came out with good news on another discovery of natural gas fields off the southern Tanzanian coastline by a Norwegian energy firm Statoil.

According to the minister Statoil's exploration found the resource that boosts the country's gas volumes by 1.0-1.8 trillion cubic feet (tcf).

The Norwegian firm says the latest discovery brings the total discovered gas volumes at its exploration site in Block 2 to approximately 22 trillion cubic feet.

Tanzania now boasts of 55.08 tcf of on-shore and off-shore natural gas reserves and officials with the exploration companies have already expressed optimism more discoveries are underway.

Some industry sources say that within five years, the country's natural gas reserves can go up four-fold and put Tanzania at the same level with major gas producers in the Middle East. Among the challenges that the country is currently facing include proper and sustainable plans of harvesting the natural gas for the benefit of all Tanzanians.
