ONGC, OIL May Need Foreign Firms for Shale Drilling in India

Indian state run energy companies Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL) are expected to rely on expertise of foreign firms to hunt for shale oil and gas, officials at the two firms told news agency Reuters.

The South Asian nation allowed national oil companies, ONGC and OIL to explore for shale resources in the country.

ONGC will be taking technical help from Houston-based ConocoPhillips for shale drilling, the Indian company's chairman, Sudhir Vasudeva, told reporters at an industry event on Friday, Reuters reported.

Earlier this month ONGC said that it is all set to explore for shale gas in Cambay Basin in Gujarat and will start drilling first set of wells next month and commence commercial production next year.

Oil India has identified the western state of Rajasthan and northeastern state of Assam for initial shale drilling and could align with Houston-based Carrizo Oil & Gas, Reuters quoted S. Rath, company’s head of operations.
