Oman's Gas Use Rises
Oman’s gas consumption during January-July was 26.5bn m3, up 10.8% year on year, Muscat Daily reported August 26, citing latest data published by country’s National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). Industry used 14.6% more year on year, or 15.55bn m³; while the power sector used 4.83bn m3, almost exactly the same as last year.
At oil fields, 5.96bn m3 were either injected or flared during the first seven months of 2018, up 16.3% compared with the same period of last year.
Oman's gas reserves are much smaller relative to the wider Middle East region. Earlier this year, BP and its partner Oman Oil Company Exploration & Production approved the development of Ghazeer, the second phase of the Khazzan gas field. First phase of the Khazzan project was inaugurated in November 2017. Khazzan is in block 61, of which BP is the operator, with a 60% interest; and the Oman Oil Company holds 40% interest.
The country has one LNG export facility majority owned by the Omani government. Oman LNG operates as a joint venture with a shareholding structure comprising the government (51%); Anglo-Dutch Shell (30%); French Total (5.54%); Korea LNG (5%); Japanese Mitsubishi Corporation (2.77%), Mitsui & Co. (2.77%) and Itochu (0.92%); and Portugal's Partex (2%).
