NYK Line, partners to develop ammonia-fuelled vessels in Japan

Japanese shipping company NYK Line, Japan Engine Corp, IHI Power Systems and Nihon Shipyard plan to develop vessels equipped with a locally produced ammonia-fuelled engine, NYK Line said on October 26.

The demonstration project has been approved by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization. The project is scheduled to begin in December, with classification society ClassNK added to the companies.

The companies will develop an ammonia-fuelled tugboat and an ammonia-fuelled ammonia gas carrier. The tugboat is expected to be delivered in 2024, NYK said.
