US’ Nuland Pays Visit to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev met with US’ Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland on Tuesday, signalling once more the importance of Baku in the current tense international chessboard.

The parts also spoke about how to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which keeps creating tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the conflict started in 1992.

Baku is trying to capitalise on its importance for Europe’s energy security, to reduce pressure on the country from mighty countries. The diversification of the routes indicates that Azerbaijan wants to create interests in Georgia, Turkey, Russia and the European Union, to avoid interference in local politics.

Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland is expected to travel to Armenia on Wednesday. Her trip is part of a series of visit in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia.

Some months ago, US officials clearly endorsed stronger cooperation between the European Union and two Caspian countries - Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
