Novatek, Nuovo Pignone Work on Lowering Emissions

Russian producer Novatek and Baker Hughes subsidiary Nuovo Pignone have agreed to co-operate on cutting CO2 emissions. The scope of work includes redesigning electrical and gas turbines for natural gas and LNG production so that they emit less CO2, the Russian partner said February 1.

This includes converting gas turbines to hydrogen-based fuel gas mix. “Baker Hughes is one of the main equipment suppliers to our Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG 2 projects,” said Novatek CEO Leonid Mikhelson. “We are expanding our co-operation with them to develop efficient and economically viable solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change on our projects – one of the essential topics for Novatek and the entire oil and gas industry. Hydrogen technologies have great prospects to reduce the level of global greenhouse gas emissions, and further work is required to develop and adapt these technologies for operations in Arctic climatic conditions."

Novatek operates the Yamal LNG project where the fourth train has started producing LNG, and the privately owned company is now developing another major export site on the nearby Gydan Peninsula.
