No Interest in Expanding EU Gas Grids: Acer

Market players have no interest in expanding EU gas networks, a report published by the EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (Acer) on July 23.

The EU seeks to identify market interest every two years, by asking market participants to commit to buying capacity to show that projects are economically feasible.

"None of the projects fulfilling the criteria of the process attracted sufficient commitments to pass the economic test that determines their economic viability," Acer said, concluding that the result meant that players felt current capacity was sufficient.

"In view of the Green Deal – aiming at making Europe climate neutral by 2050 – it will be even more important to base capacity expansion of the gas network on robust identification of market needs," it said.
