Nikkei: Tokyo Gas to supply LNG in Southeast Asia

Tokyo Gas will build liquefied natural gas terminals in Southeast Asia and supply the fuel to factories in nearby industrial areas.

The Japanese company aims to tap into economic growth in Southeast Asia at a time when demand for gas is expected to remain stagnant at home. It will also sell electricity in the region by constructing gas-fired power plants near the LNG terminals.

President Michiaki Hirose unveiled these projects in an interview with The Nikkei. "We would like to build an LNG value chain in Southeast Asia," he said.

Hirose also said that Tokyo Gas plans to increase its annual LNG procurement from around 13 million tons today to roughly 20 million tons by about 2020. The bulk of the added amount will likely be supplied in Southeast Asia. MORE
