NGVAmerica praises US infrastructure bill

NGVAmerica, an association representing the US natural gas vehicle (NGV) industry, has praised what it said were "hard fought" provisions in the infrastructure bill passed last week that will help decarbonise transport.

The bill provides funding for expanding natural gas vehicle fuelling infrastructure under the federal alternative fuels corridor grant programme. It also provides financial support for introducing buses that run on natural gas and renewable natural gas.

"This legislation is a key tool for fighting climate change and decarbonising our heavy-duty transportation sector through investments in alternative and renewable fuel technologies including natural gas," NGVAmerica president Dan Gage said in a statement.

He said the bill provided incentives for fleets of all sizes to transition to natural gas, noting that natural gas could serve as a carbon neutral or even carbon negative transport fuel depending on the source.

The $1 trillion infrastructure bill was passed by the US House of Representatives on November 5, with 13 Republican members crossing the aisle to support the legislation, while six Democrats against it. It is now heading to the desk of president Joe Biden, who will sign the bill into law.
