NGV groups peg RNG penetration at 53%

Two groups advocating for the adoption of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in the US said April 14 renewable natural gas (RNG) accounted for 53% of all on-road fuel used by NGVs in 2020.

RNG use as a transportation fuel grew 25% year-on-year in 2020, Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVAmerica) and the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) said, and its use has increased 267% over the past five years.

Across the US, natural gas equivalent to 646mn gallons of gas (GGE) was consumed last year; of that, 345mn GGE was from renewable sources.

“If we are going to have a meaningful and immediate impact on climate change and clean our urban air, we need cleaner trucks and buses on our roadways now – we can’t wait,” NGVAmerica president Dan Gage said. “RNG-fueled vehicles provide a proven and scalable net carbon negative/zero emission equivalent standard for commercial deployment today.”

RNG used as a motor fuel in 2020 displaced 3.5mn mt of CO2-equivalent emissions, the groups said.
