New poll shows strong support for Canadian LNG

More than 70% of Canadians believe the country’s LNG industry can help improve global energy security and sustainability efforts, according to the results of a new poll released September 26 by energy advocacy group Canada Action.

The online poll of 1,000 Canadian adults conducted September 16-17 found 73% of respondents said Canada should advocate for its energy sector as a global leader in environmentally sustainable production. Nearly 80% said they prefer to use Canadian energy in their day-to-day lives, rather than rely on imported energy.

“These latest polling results confirm exactly what we’ve found in our media interviews, community events, social media engagements and public interactions over the last number of months,” Canada Action founder Cody Battershill said. “Canadians are coming to understand the world will need oil and gas long into the future, and so Canada should continue to play a strong role as a country that respects workers, families and indigenous and non-indigenous communities, and that adheres to the strictest environmental, health and safety regulations in the world.”

Additional findings of the polling, conducted by Research Co, include:

  • 56% of Canadians believe it is wrong for Canada to forfeit LNG opportunities to other countries with higher emissions. That’s up five percentage points since the question was last asked in a March 2022 poll.
  • 75% agree that exporting responsible and reliable Canadian energy, expertise and technology to reduce emissions is one way Canada, which is responsible for just 1.6% of all global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, can play a role in addressing climate change.
  • 63% of respondents said investing in Canada’s oil and gas industry “makes sense” considering the value placed on climate leadership, social progress and transparency.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
