Naturgy Develops LNG Distribution System

Spanish gas utility Naturgy has developed an “innovative” system enabling the discharge of LNG from a tanker to land without the need for gas facilities at a port.

The LNGonWheels system involves a LNG tanker transferring its supplies to a tanker truck barge, which then transports the fuel to land, Naturgy said on September 11. Once the fuel has been distributed among customers, the barge then returns to the tanker to repeat the process.

The system allows for the delivery of LNG to areas lacking direct access to required facilities for gas storage and distribution, Naturgy said. It has been approved by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, and has received approval in principle by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
