Myanmar Plans to Drill More Offshore Gas Well

Myanmar will drill more offshore wells at Zawtika natural gas project in Mottama offshore block this year.

“Zawtika natural gas project has three phases. The first is to drill 36 wells. Some existing wells will stop production while others will continue. Then four platforms will be built and production will start next year,” Eleven Myanmar quoted Than Tun, an adviser to the ministry, as saying.

Currently the Zawtika gas project can produce 350-360 million cubic feet per day, 260 million cubic feet of which is exported to Thailand.

“Gas distribution remains unchanged despite a plan to drill more wells. It doesn’t aim to deliver more gas. The new wells are to fill the falling production of the old ones when their production capacity declines,” he said.

Three more platforms and 26 wells are to be drilled in 2018, Eleven Myanmar added. The Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise owns a 20-per-cent stake in the Zawtika project and Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited holds the remaining 80 per cent.
