More Activity on Bulgarian Shales

Reuters reports that Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov has said that Chevron Corp. and BNK Petroleum Inc., have filed offers to carry out shale gas exploration in northern Bulgaria.

Both companies have been reported earlier as having an interest in shale gas exploration in Bulgaria.  Two companies, Direct Petroleum and Park Place Energy, have already received permits from the government.

Traikov said that the Balkan country’s shale gas resources could greatly improve its energy independence and would create a new alternative for its gas needs.

Bulgaria’s shale gas resources have been initially estimated at some 300 million cubic meters.
