MOL to test hydrogen-fuelled engine on in-service vessel

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), MOL Drybulk and Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) have agreed to conduct a trial of a hydrogen-fuelled engine equipped on an in-service vessel, MOL said on November 9. The ship will be operated by MOL and MOL Drybulk, and the two-stroke hydrogen marine engine will be developed by J-ENG.

J-ENG will develop the engine in cooperation with Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Yanmar Power Technology Co. According to MOL, the engine will be the world's first main engine for large ocean-going or coastal vessels.

The engine development was selected for a government-subsidised project by the Japanese government-backed New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation.

MOL Group aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as part of its Environmental Vision 2.1.
