MOL Names the Fourth LNGC for Yamal

Japanese shipping firm Mitsui OSK Line (MOL) on October 20 named the last of four newbuild conventional LNG carriers for the Yamal LNG project at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in China, the company said on October 21.

The carrier, named LNG Megrez, has been jointly ordered by MOL and China COSCO Shipping Corp and has a capacity of 174,000 m3. The companies co-own all the four carriers that will transport LNG from Yamal. MOL signed a long-term charter contract for the four LNG carriers through its wholly-owned company in June 2017.

“Although the Covid-19 pandemic has been taking place during the construction of LNG Megrez, she is expected to be delivered from the shipyard in a timely manner as originally planned, despite the safety measures which have had to be taken to mitigate the dangers of the pandemic,” MOL said.

The Yamal LNG export project is situated on the Yamal Peninsula in the Russian Arctic. The Novatek-operated project was launched in December 2017 and produces around 17mn metric tons/year of LNG.
