Mitsubishi to sequester CO2 from ammonia facility

Carbon capture and storage specialist Denbury said September 21 it would transport and sequester CO₂ captured from a proposed US ammonia project steered by Mitsubishi.

“Mitsubishi aims to introduce its fuel ammonia to the Japanese market, with production commencing from its Gulf Coast facility in the latter half of the decade,” Denbury explained.

Once completed, ammonia production could reach 1mn metric tons/year, with associated CO₂ emissions of around 1.8mn mt/yr.

Denbury under a term sheet with Mitsubishi will transport and sequester the CO₂ captured from the planned ammonia site, which Denbury said it could either store or use for enhanced oil recovery operations.

Total volumes of CO₂ sequestered could exceed 50mn mt.

Denbury said its existing infrastructure already supports the sequestration of more than 3mn tons of industrial-sourced CO₂.
