Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Names New LNG Carrier

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, held a christening ceremony April 19 for the next-generation LNG carrier, currently under construction for Mitsubishi Corporation and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line).

The new ship, named Diamond Gas Sakura, is the third Sayaringo STaGE type vessel for the two companies, the newest model of LNG carrier featuring significantly improved carrying capacity and fuel performance due to the adoption of a more efficient hull structure and hybrid propulsion system, Mitsubishi Heavy said April 22.

After completion and handover in May, the vessel will transport LNG for the Cameron LNG Project in the US. The Diamond Gas Sakura has a total tank holding capacity of 165,000m3. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding received the order for the new vessel through MI LNG Company, a joint venture for the design and sale of LNG carriers established by Mitsubishi Heavy and Imabari Shipbuilding.  Construction was managed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Structure, which is based in Nagasaki.
