Mexico Joins the Shale Club

Mexico's Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has reported its first production from a shale gas well occurred in February.

The state oil monopoly reports that the well is located in the town of Hidalgo, Coahuila in the northeast of the country.

“Today, this well is in completion and production aligned through Hidalgo collection site 1, with an extraction of 2.9 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd)," read a company statement.

"Pemex has drilled ten wells considered evaluative, in areas likely to contain as much oil as gas and condensate."

Pemex said that it will perform a program of major repairs to existing wells and discuss other potential units and formations La Peña and Glenrose in the area of ​​Piedras Negras, Coahuila.

Pemex is seeking to evaluate and exploit the Eagle Ford formation in Mexico assess the potential of opportunities  similar to shale gas exploration in South Texas.

Widely known as a producing nation, Mexico also imports gas to meet domestic demand.
