McDermott secures Qatargas contract

McDermott International has been awarded a contract by Qatargas for the North Field production sustainability (NFPS) offshore fuel gas pipeline and subsea cables project, known as COMP1, it said on July 12. The contract value falls within McDermott's definition of a major contract, which ranges between $750mn and $1.5bn.

This contract is part of the NFPS offshore compression project, which involves the installation of new assets in Qatar's North Field to sustain gas supply to existing LNG production trains.

The contract includes the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of various components. This includes the installation of 118 miles (190 km) of 32" diameter subsea pipelines, 11 miles (17 km) of subsea composite cables, 116 miles (186 km) of fiber optic cables, and six miles (10 km) of onshore pipelines.

The entire project will be managed and engineered from McDermott's Doha office, with fabrication taking place at QFAB, the McDermott-Nakilat joint venture fabrication yard in Qatar.

The COMP1 project follows the North Field Expansion project contract awarded to McDermott in 2022, which is currently in progress and is one of the largest contracts the company has received to date.

Qatar is actively expanding its LNG production capacity. The North Field Expansion project, which includes the North Field South and North Field East expansion projects, is set to commence production in 2026. It will contribute more than 48mn metric tons/year to global LNG supplies and increase Qatar's LNG production capacity to 126mn metric tons/year.
