Lithuania Stresses Importance of Regional Cooperation for Energy, Defence

After a flurry of diplomatic activities over the last weeks, Lithuania’s Minister of Energy Rokas Masilius said that regional energy projects will allow the realisation of the EU internal market for energy.

‘According to the Minister, the Baltic region needs more active cooperation in order to develop a regional gas market and to synchronise the Baltic States with the continental grid of Europe. The achievement of the latter goals is vital for completion of the EU internal market for energy and improvement of energy supply security’ reads a note released on Thursday, after the two-day informal meeting of Energy Minister in Riga.

Last week, Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaité met with Taavi Rõivas, the head of the new Estonian government. The two spoke about concerted investments in defence and regional energy security.

On Wednesday, JetGas and Lithuanian LNG terminal operator Klaipedos Nafta concluded a preliminary contract. Klapeidos Nafta is working on a LNG distribution station.

‘JetGas, the only LNG supplier in Estonia, is interested to become a user of this infrastructure in order to supply LNG as an alternative fuel for the industries around the Baltic countries and to expand LNG regas stations’ network’ reads a separate statement.
