Kuwait Seeks Iranian Gas

After Oman, Kuwait has become the second Persian Gulf state which has expressed interest in importing Iranian natural gas.

"During (our) meetings with Kuwaiti energy officials we agreed to pursue plans for export of Iran's natural gas to Kuwait," Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Ali Majedi said on Tuesday, reports Iran’s Fars News Agency.

Kuwaiti officials were on a two day visit to Iran.

According to Majedi, Iran's gas exports to Kuwait will resume within the framework of previous negotiations.

As per an agreement signed between Iran and Kuwait in 2000, Iran had agreed to export about 8.6 million cubic meters per day of natural gas to Kuwait through a 260-kilometer underwater pipeline, but the project came to a halt due to certain differences, reports Fars News Agency.

In April, a senior trade official announced that Iran was ready to export gas to Kuwait.

"We are ready to export gas to Kuwait through pipeline and at a price palatable to both sides," Head of Iran's Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) Valiollah Afkhamirad said, addressing the 12th Iran-Kuwait Joint Trade Committee in Tehran on April 4.

Kuwait is looking to meet rising demand for gas and recently signed LNG imports deals with Qatargas, BP and Shell
