Lithuania: Klaipedos Nafta Invites Bids for Purchase of LNG

Klaipedos Nafta, the company which is developing the Klapeida LNG terminal in Lithuania, has today invited bids for the supply of liquefied natural gas to the terminal.

In a statement released on its website today, and in one disseminated to the Financial Times, the company issued a notice for the procurement of LNG supply to the terminal. The company will invite bids for the supply of the gas beginning from today. The closing date for bids is the 29th of October 2012.

The contracts for the supply will be offered for an annual capacity of 0.75 billion cubic metres of gas a year with Klaipedos Nafta expressing a preference for offers of ten-year contracts. However, other "reasonable proposals" will be considered, the company said.

The terminal, which seeks to break Lithuania's dependence on gas imports, particularly those from Russia's Gazprom, will begin operations from the 1st of January 2015. As such, Klapeidos Nafta said today, it will seek the supply contracts to begin from that date, unless otherwise agreed between the company and the supplier.

When operational, the Port of Klaipeda LNG terminal will supply a minimum of 25 per cent of Lithuania's gas needs, as mandated by a government law passed in June of this year.
