Sydney-listed Kinetiko Energy on March 3 said initial interpretation results from a high-resolution aeromagnetic survey conducted at the Amersfoort coalbed methane (CBM) project in South Africa had confirmed the continuity of gas-prospective geology.  

Six new potential gas compartments have been identified in the survey area ranging in size from 5.7 km² to 22.5 km² and in total 77 km². The total gas compartments identified on the Amersfoort project have now reached 37, it said.

Aircraft covered 273 km² over a selected portion of ER271 and ER38 which forms part of the Amersfoort project, Kinetiko said. This latest survey links together the two previous surveys for a combined 965 km² of gas prone Karoo sediments and intruding dolerite bodies. 

At present, modelling at the project allows for approximately one production well/km². The current scale of gas compartments found could potentially host up to 257 wells, the company said. 

Kinetiko has a 49% stake in two onshore gas licences in the Amersfoort area. Under a farm-out agreement with South Africa's Badimo Gas, Kinetiko is the project operator. According to Kinetiko, the Amersfoort area of the Eastern Transvaal coalfield between Johannesburg and Durban is one of the most prospective areas for CBM.
