KBR Gets Abadi Pre-Feed Contract

US engineering firm KBR has won a pre-front end engineering development (pre-Feed) contract for the Abadi onshore LNG project in the Arafura sea in Indonesia.

KBR will provide operator Inpex with services including site master plan development, scope of work for the Feed phase as well as an engineering, procurement and construction schedule and cost estimate, it said May 8. This work is expected to be performed within six months or so, with KBR performing studies to establish the configuration of the LNG plant, supporting utilities, and product storage and export facilities.

Owing to the remote location of the plant in eastern Indonesia, the original plan was to use floating liquefaction. KBR plans to deploy its logistics expertise to provide solutions for efficient management of construction personnel, materials and equipment. The source of the gas is the Masela block, for which the licence would ordinarily have expired in 2028. But last October Indonesia agreed to extend Inpex’s contract by up to 27 years from that date.
