Japan's Rengo to shift from coal to gas in paperboard manufacturing

Rengo, the Japanese packaging company, on June 5 announced its plans to eliminate the use of coal and promote the use of natural gas at its domestic paperboard manufacturing bases by 2027.

Currently, the Kanazu Mill and Marusan Paper, both part of Rengo's paper division, consume around 125,000 metric tons/year of coal. By phasing out coal, the company aims to make significant progress towards its reduction target for fossil energy-derived CO2 emissions.

Rengo is actively promoting the use of cleaner and lower CO2-emitting fuels such as city gas and LNG. Additionally, the company is expanding its utilisation of renewable energy sources like solar power and biomass.

Under its Eco Challenge 2030 initiative, Rengo has set a target to reduce fossil energy-derived CO2 emissions by 46% compared to fiscal year 2013 by the year 2030. Furthermore, as part of its long-term goal, Rengo has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
