Japan's MOL Delivers LNG Vessel to Mitsui

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) October 19 announced the delivery of the LNG carrier Marvel Eagle to Mitsui & Co.

The vessel is the first of three new-build LNG carriers, for which MOL and Mitsui & Co. signed charter contracts in September 2014 and January 2015. The 155,000 m3 capacity vessel’s naming ceremony was held in September at Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ Sakaide Shipyard.

The Marvel Eagle is the first vessel equipped with a new ship operation data collection device, which feeds information to the Fleet Optimal Control Unified System (Focus) project recently announced by MOL. 'Focus' gathers and applies ship operation data to ensure safer, more environmentally friendly ocean transport. Detailed voyage and engine data on actual voyages will be collected from the vessel during operation, stored in a cloud-based data platform and used to develop further applications.

Marvel Eagle will transport LNG from the Cameron LNG project in the US state of Louisiana. A year ago, Sempra admitted that its Cameron LNG development had fallen behind schedule with start-up being deferred until 2019; however, it stated that the three-train complex would open by 2020.
