Japan's LNG Imports Spike 21% in Feb

Japan’s LNG imports in February came in at 8.06mn metric tons, up 21.5% year/year, according to the provisional data released by the country’s finance ministry on March 17. Month on month, imports were unchanged.   

LNG imports from the Middle East dropped 8.7% yr/yr while imports from Russia jumped 20% yr/yr, the data showed. LNG imports from Asian sources increased by almost 18% yr/yr while imports of US LNG doubled.

During the 2020 calendar year, Japan imported 74.46mn mt of LNG, down 3.7% yr/yr. Despite the decline, Japan remains the world's biggest LNG importer.
