Japan's Chugoku Electric plans to upgrade Yanai CCGT

Chugoku Electric Power, a Japanese utility company, on April 27 announced its plans to install the latest combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) at its Yantai gas-fired power plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

The turbines at units 1 and 2 of the plant are almost 30 years old, and the company aims to replace them to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Yanai power plant consists of six 131 MW units at Unit 1 and four 198 MW units at Unit 2. Unit 1 was commissioned in 1992, while Unit 2 became operational in 1996.

In addition to the turbine replacement, Chugoku Electric Power is also planning to implement hydrogen co-firing in the future, according to the announcement.
