Japanese Power Companies LNG Usage in July Up 5%

Japan’s 10 regional power companies consumed 5 million tons of LNG equivalent last, a 5.2 percent rise from a year earlier, data released by the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan showed Tuesday.

The utilities have resorted to LNG usage for power generation since the shutdown of nuclear power plants due to 2011 earthquake and tsunami. 

Japan imported record LNG in 2013 as demand for the fuel saw strong rise.

The country imported 87.49 million tonnes of LNG last year, up 0.2 percent, Ministry of Finance data released showed earlier this year  Total value of imports stood at 7.06 trillion yen ($68.98 billion), which is also a record.

Japan is world biggest importer of LNG.
