Japanese Delegation in Iran for Gas Talks

A delegation from Japan is visiting Iran to discuss possibility of importing gas from the hydrocarbon rich nation, Fars News Agency reported Thursday.

Japan has been imported record LNG in last few years as demand for the fuel saw strong rise due to shut down of its nuclear stations since the Fukushima disaster in 2011. The country imported 87.49 million tonnes of LNG in 2013. In 2014, the imports touched a new record at 88.51 million tons.

The visit follows recent calls by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to look for new sources of gas in order to guarantee energy security, Fars News said.

Iran is currently exporting natural gas through a pipeline to Turkey. Tehran also plans to exports gas to neighbouring nations like Oman and Iraq via pipeline.
