Japan pledges $10bn to support zero carbon emissions in Asia

Japan will provide $10bn in funds over the next five years to assist Asia along the path to zero carbon emissions, the country’s prime minister Fumio Kishida told the COP 26 summit on November 2.

Kishida said that Japan will do its utmost to tackle the issue of climate change. Tokyo will promote the transition to clean energy, help create a carbon-free society and push the use of renewable energy, mainly in Asia, he added.

The $10bn aid comes on top of $60bn in climate finance Japan announced in June. This is targeted at bringing developed countries closer to delivering on the promise to mobilise $100bn/year in climate finance, Kishida said.

The prime minister reiterated Japan's goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030 compared with 2013 levels. He said that Japan will allocate $100mn to ammonia and hydrogen-based power projects.
