Itochu to Develop Ammonia Supply for Shipping

Itochu has teamed up with fellow Japanese companies Ube Industries and Uyeno Transtech to provide ammonia for use as a shipping fuel and jointly develop supply sites in Japan, it said on March 12.

Itochu said early development of zero-emission vessels was needed to meet targets set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which include a 40% improvement in vessel efficiency by 2030 and a 50% cut in greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 2050 versus the levels in 2008.

Under the partnership, Itochu and its subsidiary Itochu Enex will develop marine ammonia fuel supply sites and supply vessels, while helping to develop ammonia-fuelled vessels. Uyeno, the largest owner of vessels in Japan and already involved in LNG bunkering, will also study and help develop ammonia fuel supply vessels, and formulate safety standards for refuelling. Ube Industries, as one of Japan's biggest ammonia producers, will focus on supplying the fuel for shipping purposes.
