Uniper to Deliver US LNG to Italy

Italy will receive its first natural gas deliveries from the US over the weekend, according to a release from German energy company Uniper.

Uniper won a tender to deliver 105,000 m³ of LNG from the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana to Toscana terminal, making it the third US shipment to Europe.

The tender for peak-shaving gas was awarded by the ministry of economic development, according to the statement.
By winning the tender, Uniper is obliged to respond to winter peak-demand situations between January and March 2017 by withdrawing the necessary amount of gas from the terminal and delivering it to SNAM Rete Gas, Italy’s gas transmission system operator. The price was agreed on in the tender, according to the statement.

Spain and Portugal have already received gas from the US, where Cheniere's Sabine Pass terminal is the only operational export terminal of any size. The company won approval from US regulators to export LNG in 2010.
