Iraq inaugurates gas liquefaction plant in Rumaila oilfield

Iraq has inaugurated the first phase of the natural gas liquefaction plant project in the Rumaila oil field, state-owned Iraqi News Agency reported on May 31 citing a statement by the country’s oil ministry.

The project, with a capacity of 200mn ft3/day, aims to reduce gas-burning operations and convert the associated gas into clean energy for power generation and production of LPG and condensate. The second phase of the project, expected to be commissioned at the end of 2023, is expected to have a capacity of 400mn ft3/day.

The Iraqi minister of oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, said the new plant will contribute to generating 1.9 GW of electricity to supply the national grid, 2,150 metric tons/day of LPG and 5,900 barrels/day of condensate.

The minister said that the project utilises modern technologies to purify and treat the associated gas, preventing the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere and contributing to environmental preservation.
