Iran Willing to Increase Gas Exports to Armenia

Iran is willing to increase the amount of gas it exports to Armenia, state owned Shana News reported Sunday.

In return, Iran will import more electricity from Armenia.

“The details on the exchanges between Iran and Armenia will be discussed while the bilateral framework will be maintained,” Iran’s Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh said a meeting with the visiting Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Yervand Zakharian.

In 2004, the two countries has signed an agreement for export of Iran's natural gas to Armenia. The gas is used by Armenian power plants to generate electricity and in return, Armenia exports electricity to Iran.

The pipeline transporting Iran's gas to Armenia is capable of transmitting more than six million cubic meters of natural gas per day, but is currently taking only one million cubic meters of gas due to lack of required infrastructure inside Armenia, the minister said.
