Iran Misses Gas Target for Power

Iran used 6.8% more gas in its power plants in 2017 than in 2016, reaching 62.47bn m³, according to reports from the energy ministry, but owing to a gas shortage it used 14.4% more diesel, or 5.23bn litres, than in 2016. It also used 0.4% more of the dirtier fuel oil, which notched up 4.384bn litres.

In 2017, Iran’s nominal power generation capacity rose 3.2% on year to 78.332 GW. The growth for 2016 was 2.95%. The country should have increased power generation by least 5%/yr but during the summer, some Iranian cities had power outages.

According to a document, prepared by oil ministry and seen by NGW, Iran’s refined gas injection to grid also rose 5.1% on year to 215bn m3 in 2017. The growth for 2016 was about 9%, compared with 2015.
