Iran Set to Have Largest Gas Storage Capacity in the Region

Iran is set to have the largest gas storage capacity in Middle East during the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 21, according to a news report by Tasnim News Agency.

"Once the Shoorijeh gas storage facility comes on stream, Iran will rank fifth in the world for largest gas storage capacity," Tasnim News Agency quoted the CEO of Natural Gas Storage Company (NGSC).

The Shoorijeh gas storage facility has the capacity to store 4.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

In January last year, Iran opened region’s biggest gas storage plant in the Sarajeh region in Qom province.

Under the Fifth Five Year Development Plan (2010-2015), Iran's Petroleum Ministry is obliged to raise gas storage capacity to 14 billion cubic meters per year by 2015. Studies are underway to locate proper sites for building 40 gas storage facilities.
