Iran Sees Room for Exporting Gas to Afghanistan

Iran continues its efforts to increase cooperation with neighbouring countries, with the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) saying on Tuesday that it could export gas to Afghanistan through a pipeline or small LNG terminals.

“Currently, the possibility exists for Iran to pipe natural gas to border cities of Afghanistan through a 100-kilometer pipeline from Iran’s South Khorasan province” Managing director of NIGC Hamidreza Araqi said, as reported by the company’s website.

According to NIGC, the idea is not yet on the political agenda, being simply put forward by private sector companies.

‘Araqi noted that NIGC is ready to provide necessary infrastructures for gas exports to Afghanistan.’

Earlier this week, the company said that its pipeline for exporting gas to Iraq will be ready for use in May.

Iran would initially export 4 million cubic meters of gas per day (MMcm/d) to Iraq, but it said it could increase its export to Iraq to 40 MMcm per day.
