Iran Ready to Increase Gas Supplies to Armenia

Iran is contemplating fivefold increase in gas exports to Armenia subject to certain pre-conditions, reported Mehr News Agency Sunday.

Alireza Kamali, the managing director of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC), said, “Possibility exists to increase the amount of gas exports by five times.”

However, he added that this could materialise given that Armenia constructs a new electricity transmission line between the two countries.

Iran and Armenia signed a deal in 2004 based on which the Iranian gas is used by Armenian power plants to generate electricity and in return, Armenia exports the electricity to Iran.

Currently, Iran exports nearly one million cubic meters of natural gas to Armenia per daily, Kamali said.

It is anticipated that the construction of new electricity networks will increase the volume of power trade between Iran and Armenia from the current 300 megawatts to about 1,000 megawatts, Mehr reported.

Last August, Iran and Armenia signed a new contract for the construction of the third power transmission line that will enable the two countries to exchange more electricity.
