Iran, Georgia Hold Gas Talks

Iran has held discussions with Georgia regarding export of natural gas via Armenia.

The plan is to export Iranian gas to Armenian border, for Georgia to receive it at its border with Armenia, managing director of National Iranian Gas Exports Company (NIGEC) said, according to Iranian media outlet IRNA.

Initially about 300-500 million cubic feet a day of Iranian gas is expected to be supplied through a pipeline for use in power generation in Georgia, Ali Reza Kameli said Monday. However, he stated that export of gas to Georgia should be done when it is economical.

Currently, Iran exports gas to Armenia in exchange for electricity. Turkey is the biggest buyer of gas from Iran.

On exporting gas to Europe via Georgia, Kameli said that priority is to export gas in the form of LNG and not via pipeline.
